How I’m Spending Winter Break

One thing about UD is that we are blessed with an especially long winter break. With classes not starting back up until February, breaks are a rare opportunity to actually breathe, reset, and make the most of the time we don’t have during the semester. Instead of letting it slip by, I am planning to make the most of this break by keeping myself busy, balancing rest, personal interests, and preparation for the spring semester.

The Hidden Language of Red Envelopes

Red envelopes (hóngbāo in Mandarin, lai see in Cantonese) are a symbol of Chinese culture and tradition. My Thoughts On Netflix’s Avatar

    April 2, 2024 /

When Netflix first announced their live-action Avatar project in 2018, high school me was ecstatic. Nickelodeon’s Avatar was my one and only afterschool special treat. As a kid, I loved the action, and even rewatching it recently, its story is complex and timeless. These qualities in animation and digital media are something we see less and less of now. As studios look to cut costs and maximize their profits as much as possible, writers and storytellers have less and less time to develop complex stories, resulting in what I like to call the Netflix Effect.

As February comes to an end and winter starts to die down, so does my immune system. As a student that attends the University of Delaware but am from New York, my mother’s homemade meals aren’t always around for me. The thought of her homemade meals served hot and fresh from the stove never fails to make my mouth water. Why does it feel easier to make other Asian friends?

    March 5, 2024 /

As someone who struggled growing up with double identities, I often wonder what group of people I most identify with and conform to. As someone who struggles to speak my native tongue or simply write my Korean name, I realized my reliance on my “Americanness” and its influence on what I perceive myself to be. Growing up as an immigrant, my biggest wish was to be accepted into the American culture and community. I would approach my white friends with hope that they would accept me as their own. I was lucky enough to have it easy making friends with this mindset, and I grew up surrounded by diverse friend…

My Favorite K-Dramas About Small Towns

    March 5, 2024 /

There is something about K-dramas that take place in a small town. You feel the warmth of the community, always willing to give each other a hand when they need it the most. Watching them feels like an escape almost. Like you no longer have to worry about the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Instead you take things one day at a time, one step in front of the other. It’s calming, but there’s always a story behind why everyone is there. Here are my top three favorites from this genre.
