Smithereens Review

Submitted by Kayla Yap

After 2 years, Joji has finally released another album titled “SMITHEREENS” on November 4th. The first song released from the album, “Glimpse of Us,” did incredibly well with over 600 million plays on Spotify and gave us a glimpse 😉 into what the vibes of the next album would be.

After the first initial listen, it’s obvious that out of all of his albums this one is one of the sadder, more melancholic ones, but that doesn’t drive away from the fact that it’s a great album. It consists of 9 tracks in total spanning over 25 minutes. The album succeeds in following the same bedroom pop/lofi vibes from his previous albums; however, the overall meaning of the album is definitely much sadder and deeper compared to the rest of his discography. The main theme focuses on Joji trying to get over heartbreak and move past it.

In my opinion, Glimpse of Us is the best song on the album just because it’s so beautifully written and out of all the tracks in the album, you can really feel the emotion the most in this song. A close second for me would probably be Die For You because it’s another emotionally powerful song, but another month listening to this album my opinion could change as this album is still relatively new at the moment. I would personally give the album an 8/10 and it would be a 10/10 for me, but I have to say that Nectar is still my favorite Joji album. However, that doesn’t undermine the fact that SMITHEREENS was an incredibly well produced and well-made album. If you’re interested in listening to the album, SMITHEREENS is streaming now on Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music!
