How I’m Spending Winter Break

One thing about UD is that we are blessed with an especially long winter break. With classes not starting back up until February, breaks are a rare opportunity to actually breathe, reset, and make the most of the time we don’t have during the semester. Instead of letting it slip by, I am planning to make the most of this break by keeping myself busy, balancing rest, personal interests, and preparation for the spring semester.

The Bizarre Journey of Boba

Boba has turned into a worldwide phenomenon over the last decade. It has grown to be the perfect drink to grab on the go and is beloved by the younger generation. Here at the University of Delaware, we have a handful of boba shops such as Comma Cafe, Kung Fu Tea, TBaar, and Tiger Sugar. With such a large popularity, let’s take a dive into the origin of boba.

The Hidden Language of Red Envelopes

Red envelopes (hóngbāo in Mandarin, lai see in Cantonese) are a symbol of Chinese culture and tradition. These vibrant envelopes are usually associated with Lunar New Year, weddings, and other grand celebrations. But these pockets hold deeper meanings beyond their monetary gifts—they carry wishes of luck, protection, and connection across generations.

    What is Sustainable Art?

    May 2, 2022 /

When I think of sustainable art, I think of creating sculptures from recycled materials. I also think of Spencer Shay from iCarly, who created many abstract pieces made from the most random things, like a plastic bottle robot. While I would call some of his works from the show sustainable, I don’t think the giant toast sculpture made from pounds and pounds of butter counts. iCarly was a hit show that many people watched, and this was my introduction to sustainable art and I bet many others too.

In celebration of the Lunar New Year, the University of Delaware’s Vietnamese Student Association hosted a spectacular event called Gather for Tet. VSA’s Gather for Tet Show: Their President’s Perspective

    March 30, 2022 /

Despite being a relatively new organization, VSA hosted a large Lunar New Year show, which they called the Gather For Tet Show. From fantastic performances to a large-scale betting game, the event was spectacular. Behind the scenes though, many people worked tirelessly for hours, days, months to pull off such a smooth show that lasted three to four hours. Amazed by the event, I had to interview the person running the whole thing, VSA’s own president, Kimmy Huynh.

Don’t miss out! Top 5 Underrated Asian Artists to Check Out

    March 30, 2022 /

I love supporting the Asian community by listening to different Asian artists and sharing their music with others. Growing up, I was never exposed to modern music made by Asian Americans or Asians around the world as the community I lived in was predominantly white. As Asians artists make their mark on the media through the Shang-Chi soundtrack or even through Tik Tok trends, I personally can’t help but be super excited for them. It is so inspiring to see musicians that we identify with culturally succeed and share their talents with the world.

Asian Americans in Comedy: The Career Path Your Parents Never Saw Coming

    March 30, 2022 /

When parents ask, “What do you want to do when you grow up?” it’s probably very unlikely to have a kid who answers the question with: “I want to be a comedian!”. It’s probably even more unlikely to find kids of Asian immigrants even considering this particular career path. Safe to say, the precarious combination of extremely high stakes and very low reward is probably an Asian parent’s worst nightmare.

Self Love in the Age of Social Media

    March 7, 2022 /

Nowadays, it’s become second nature to open a social media app and scroll past a series of flawless people, places, and things. Having this kind of pressure shoved down our throats 24/7 can really do a number on our mental health—I’ve found myself down a rabbit hole of jealousy and self-deprecation too many times to count. But the real question—and the one I believe we should be focusing on—is how do we learn to just be content in our own field?
