With midterm season right around the corner, snacks are a great way to destress and munch on while you’re studying or doing work. While there aren’t that many asian markets within walking distance of campus, Newark and New Castle County have a wide selection within driving distance.
A reliable classic is the pineapple bun. Also known as a “bo lo bao” in Cantonese, it is a sweet pastry typically filled with a red bean paste. While sweet, don’t be fooled by the pineapple in its name. Its outer criss cross design and golden-brown color is what gives it its name.
If you’re looking for a smaller serving size, try shrimp chips. They’re small bite sized puff chips that are subtly shrimp flavored.
No samosa has ever failed me. They’re a savory snack that’s best paired with their iconic mango chutney dipping sauce. Another baked pastry, this variety is typically filled with spiced potatoes, peas, and sometimes meat.
Mochi is also another great snack. They’re a sticky rice cake also with a filling, but their ingenious design coats them in a layer of starch that prevents the rice cake from sticking to your fingers.
We can’t forget about Pocky. Another wheat based snack, dipped in chocolate, this is a lighter snack great for on-the-go events or occasions. Their small serving size makes them great for nights when you need to munch on something fast and with little preparation.
