Why Valentine’s Day Should Be Everyday

Submitted by Angelina Ng

One of the most popular holidays in the month of February is Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day is represented to celebrate love, whether it is romantically, platonically, or pure admiration. Every year, on February 14th, loved ones express their love through words and actions. The National Retail Federation (NRF) conducted an annual survey, which resulted in a statistic that concluded that in 2024, Americans spent around $25.8 billion on Valentine’s Day. The average American spent over half their Valentine’s Day budget on their significant other. Additionally, Americans spend the majority on gifts for family members, friends, teachers, classmates, and even pets! February’s month encompasses a time of love and admiration, however, there should be no need for a national holiday. We should show love for each other every day!

Why should we only celebrate love for a day? Why should we buy gifts for our loved ones for a day? Why should we treat everyone with love for a day? Although there are birthdays and other holidays that are celebrated, love should not be heavily expressed for the Valentine’s season. The origin of this day began as a Christian feast day to honor a martyr named Valentine. Through later folk traditions, it has also become a significant, religious, and cultural celebration of romance in several regions of the world. This graceful day technically signifies the accomplishments of St. Valentine. Its stem name originates from ancient Roman festivals and Christian traditions honoring St. Valentine. The deep meaning of Valentine’s Day celebrates love in all forms. Expressing love and gratitude strengthens relationships and fosters a sense of connection.

With deep connection, admiration, and affection, this national holiday should not be abandoned throughout the rest of the year. Many individuals tend to overlook the true meaning of Valentine’s Day–as they often prioritize flowers, presents, chocolates, and materialistic items rather than emotional affection toward others. Gift-giving is an amazing gesture and should not be overlooked, but this gesture should occur on other occasions as well. Although Valentine’s Day is an appreciable holiday celebrated by many loved ones, it should not be confined to a singular day. This holiday can somewhat serve as a reminder to appreciate and express love for those around you. Overall, making a meaningful gesture and making everyone feel loved can make individuals feel appreciative and fortunate for sentimental moments.
