The Symbolism of My Chinese Zodiac Sign

Submitted by Angelina Ng

The Chinese zodiac sign is similar to a horoscope: your sign is determined by the animal that is associated with the year in which you are born. The twelve zodiac signs are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. With the twelve animal signs, it is believed that each has unique personality traits and characteristics associated with it. This was assigned by the ancient Chinese. They believed that these traits would be embodied in people, according to their zodiac sign.

Born in 2004, my Chinese zodiac sign is a monkey (猴). Overall, a monkey’s personality traits are described as sharp, smart, and curious. These traits just scratch the surface of the meaning of this animal, and there is a deeper meaning behind the wit and curiosity. People who are born in the Year of the Monkey are typically considered to be clever, adaptable, and good at problem-solving. Additionally, they are humorous with an outgoing personality. Due to these traits, monkeys are often most successful in careers that require intelligence, creativity, and adaptability. Many excel in fields that include business, writing, journalism, or the arts. This sign is associated with a lively and dynamic personality that is extremely fun to be around.

The sign of a monkey can correlate to an individual’s traits in regards to relationships. The Chinese zodiac compatibility can be regarded as an important symbol and reference in Chinese people’s love and marriage life. They are known to have a playful and affectionate nature. Generally, they are compatible with people who are born in the years of the Ox and Rabbit. They are not known to be compatible with tiger or pig signs. They tend to bring a sense of joy and spontaneity, seeking partners who can appreciate their fun and energetic spirits! To get along with monkeys, they need someone patient and understanding. They need more space and freedom; restricted love will make them feel pressured.

As compassionate and great as these monkey signs might sound, they are also popularly known for some negative traits. Monkeys are lively and witty, but this might lead to their impatience. When things develop unexpectedly, they appear to be fussy and upset. At times, their stubborn personality makes them unwilling to listen to others’ advice or ideas. This can also influence their original judgments and decisions. They’re hilariously known to be cheeky little pricks. Their never-ending energy can mean that others sometimes find them annoying or nosy!

With all these personality traits and characteristics…do any of these traits apply to me? Honestly, yes, in small ways! I feel that this zodiac sign represents me in terms of curiosity and adaptability. I always have my random thoughts and ambitious to get things done. Additionally, I feel that I am pretty good at adjusting to new environments and meeting new people! In terms of career, I am heavily interested and involved with health behavior research. This involves lots of writing and critical thinking, which is what I believe represents traits of the Monkey sign. Some aspects of the relationship area of the Monkey sign resonates with me. First, I feel that I am affectionate with loved ones. I do believe that having someone who is patient and understanding is great for my relationships. For the negative traits, I will admit that I am fussy at times (mostly when I am starving). I don’t believe I am stubborn, but I do find myself a little too silly for some people!
