The Sweetest Fruits to Add to Your Fruit Salad this Spring

Submitted by Angelina Ng

As the months of winter come to an end, spring presents a flourishment of sweet fruits that can be found in any market. With the usual winter fruits of bananas, pears, apples, and grapes, some other delicious fruits are available during this spring season. In this article is a list of the juiciest and sweetest fruits to put in your fruit salad for this spring!

Strawberries

For the best-tasting strawberries, it is best to buy them during spring and early summer. The bold red color and juicy sweetness of strawberries are at their prime during this season. This fruit is considered ‘good’ this season due to it being a cool-season crop. This means that they thrive in mild temperatures and are at their peak flavor during their natural growing season. Additionally, other berries (blueberries and blackberries) are all in season during spring.

Mangoes

Although this tropical fruit thrives in frost-free tropical and warmer subtropical climates, their sweet season starts in spring. Despite their prime season being late spring (around May), it is hard to wait for these delicious fruits until then. Peak mango season is from May to September. However, because mangos can come from so many different countries, you can usually buy mangos at any time of the year! Mangos are great to incorporate into fruit salads. A favorite salad of mine would be a tropical salad containing tropical fruits like pineapple and papaya.

Avocados

Avocados are available year round, and there have been many different seasons for these fruits. However, the usual peak season for avocados would typically be from spring through summer/early fall (roughly from April through August). Some suggest that it is from late winter to early spring. During the peak season of avocados, the fruit has developed higher oil content, resulting in that buttery flavor and texture that we all love. Although avocados aren’t categorized as sweet fruit, they can be mixed into many green salads and provide a source of potassium and boost heart health!

Lemons & Limes

Lemons and limes are generally considered to be winter and early spring fruits (typically from November to April). They would hold a sweeter and better taste. These citrus fruits are generally considered a winter/spring crop, with their peak production occurring during these months. Lemons and limes are beneficial due to their high vitamin C content and their antioxidant + anti-inflammatory properties. Although their tart and sour taste would not be ideal to put directly into your fruit salads, their juices add an exquisite flavor and can truly leave a great taste in your mouth.

Several fruits taste better as the seasons change. Be sure to run to your nearest supermarket and grab these fruits to either make a delicious fruit salad or have it around your house to snack on. With the warmer weather, these juicy and delicious fruits are truly great to have!
