Spy x Family Review

Submitted by Kayla Yap

With all the new anime coming out right now, there is one brand new anime that took the anime community by storm. Back in April, a new anime called Spy x Family was released and quickly rose to be a fan favorite. Spy x Family is about a spy who takes on a mission under the name Loid Forger, and quickly has to build a family as a part of his cover. To do so, he marries a woman named Yor, who turns out to be an assassin, and adopts a child named Anya, who happens to be an esper who reads minds. Not only does he have to keep his mission under wraps, but he also must live a life with this family he created in order to keep his cover.

This comedy/action anime has a slower pacing in my opinion, but that does not undermine the quality of the overall story. It takes its time getting the audience to fall in love with each of the characters. Loid comes off as a likable protagonist and it’s interesting to see his dynamic with the family. It’s only been 12 episodes and there is already high quality character development being shown. It’s adorable seeing this trained soldier, who has only known about missions his entire life, slowly becoming a better father and husband. The animation style is unique, refreshing, and is overall amazing in my opinion. Since it’s so new, I would recommend it to someone who is first starting to watch anime because it’s in no way overwhelming.

Additionally, the anime became so popular within the past year that it even earned its own clothing collab with the famous Asian clothing brand, Uniqlo! It comprises four different shirts: two of the shirts show the entire Forger family, one displaying the title of the show promptly, and the last features Anya on her own shirt. Each shirt cost around $20 and the merch immediately sold out upon release over the summer. This alone shows off how successful the anime has been over the course of only the past few months.

Overall, I would rate the anime a 8.5/10, but I can see my rating being much higher as more episodes come out. The manga itself is ongoing, but season 1 part 2 of the anime will premiere October 1st with episodes coming out every Sunday! Streaming will be available on Crunchyroll!!
