Welcome back to campus! Whether you are a first year student or have one semester left before graduation, everyone has a mix of good and bad days during the school year. As the semester progresses, our busy schedules and course load inevitably add up, which can be tiring and overwhelming. However, this time of year will also be filled with new beginnings that we should celebrate and enjoy in the moment. To help focus on the positives, here are some upbeat songs by AAPI artists to cheer you up on a rainy day or when you find yourself swamped with school work.
“IT’S YOU” by MAX, featuring Keshi
About the song: Even though this song is already super well known, I had to include it since its already on the list of my top plays for this semester. The lyrics are so so sweet and the acoustic guitar always makes me feel soft. A new semester means new beginnings, so feel free to play this around new friends from your dorm, a cute first date, or during a wholesome self-care session.
About the artist(s): Like so many of my friends, I love both of these artists so much and feel like neither of them need an intro. While MAX does not represent the AAPI music industry himself, he has collaborations with artists like SUGA as well as Hailey Kiyoko. As for Keshi, this artist has blown up over recent years and represented the AAPI community between his performance in the Head in the Clouds music festival along with his long list of top hits.
“Endlessly” by Bixby
About the song: Although this song is actually about heartbreak, it has an upbeat energy which makes it perfect for a morning run outside or walk to class on a nice day. For me, I like to play this song first thing in the morning as it’s only about two minutes long. It really helps me wake up in a good mood, even if I’m running late to class (which is most days). Bixby, the artist, has the most soothing and soft voice that makes me feel stress-free.
About the artist: bixby is a very underrated artist with around 7,267 followers on spotify. While he only has a few songs as of now, they all have a happy and chill vibe to them. If you like artists like Luke Chiang and Keshi, this artist is definitely for you!
“PEACHSUN” by Lukey
About the song: This song is pretty carefree, but the lyrics seem to create a story about running into a girl and living in the present. It is important that we enjoy every moment as much as we can and surround ourselves with positive and loving people. While in college, we need to remind ourselves of messages like these as time really does fly by, especially during these few years.
About the artist: Lucas Geniza, or “Lukey” is a Filipino American artist. He not only has some catchy hits, but creates his own cover art and is known to advocate for and inspire other Asians who want to pursue music. I actually just found him recently, but I love his vibe and cannot wait to check out more of his work!
