Ideas That My Parents Grew Up With That Are Still Valid

Submitted by Anonymous

I used to think my parents were crazy for being too clean. Whenever we would return from a trip, our suitcases would get wiped down with lysol wipes and you have to change from your outside clothes into your inside clothes. Younger me thought the premise of changing into dedicated clothes to go outside and then immediately changing into another set was a waste of time, especially if I was planning on going back outside later. But, after living on my own for a bit, while I have not adopted changing into a dedicated set of inside clothes, I understand where they are coming from. Why? Because these old buildings around campus are FILTHY. In the case of renting, for example, our landlord does not have a vested interest in keeping our apartment clean. Frankly, it is because they have a guaranteed supply for renters nearby, that there’s no need to keep it clean or add amenities to attract new tenants. Similarly, I have no idea when the lecture halls were last cleaned. Just being in the real world and being more observant with how places are maintained has allowed me to reflect and think, “huh, maybe my parents did have a point”.
