AAPC E-Board: Our Holiday Traditions

Submitted by Grace Zhang

Grace Zhang (AAPC President)

“One of my favorite traditions over the holiday season involves having all my closest family friends over for Christmas dinner. It’s been tough over the past years with Covid to have everyone over, but we’re hoping to have a smaller get together for the first time in a while and I’m so excited to see everyone and spend quality time together!”

Julia Sayco (AAPC Secretary)

“Some of the traditions we have over New Years are: roasting chestnuts, cooking palitaw (a traditional filipino sticky rice dessert), opening all the doors and turning on all the lights while also sweeping out the bad energy, going out to buy 12 different fruits for abundance, and shaking coins at midnight. We also traditionally wear red during the holiday season!”

Stephen Li (AAPC Treasurer)

“Usually during the holiday season our cousins come over for dinner and we do a family white elephant!”

Luann Ji (AAPC Web Designer)

“For the holiday season, we usually eat hot pot (a traditional Chinese method of cooking a variety of meat and vegetables in a simmering pot of soup stock) with our family. We don’t usually put up a Christmas tree anymore, but we decorate with beautiful poinsettia plants instead!”

Sarah Rata (AAPC Social Media Chair)

“A lot of families I know do this but for New Years Eve, but my family always buys twelve different kinds of round fruits and then we make a big spread like on our dining table! And the fruits represent luck and good fortune.”

Anh Ho (AAPC Social Media Assistant)

My family makes a big pot of hot chocolate and we mix salted caramel and dark chocolate from William Sonoma. We then all get together as a family and watch A Christmas Story.”

Michelle Ewton (AAPC Writing Editor Asst.)

For the past few years we’ve added new things to our Christmas tree. This year we added new lights. Last year we hung a new set of ornaments. The year before that we decided to go for a star instead of an angel. The year before that we added a train track around the base. That one was pretty much retired after that year…”
