Christmas at the White House 2020

Submitted by Sabrina Lee

While the holiday season looked a little different this past December, I had the honor of visiting the White House during my absolute favorite time of the year. I was able to reflect on all of that I am thankful for in my life, including my friends and family, and remember to never take anything for granted.

The theme of this year’s holiday decorations was “America the Beautiful”–chosen as a way to celebrate our Nation during such a difficult time. It is to remind everyone of the blessings in our lives that would not be possible without all the frontline workers working tirelessly in the pandemic, the brave men and women of our Armed Forces, and those whom we have lost.

I am no professional photographer, but take a look at all the photos from my incredible visit!

Featured in the State Dining Room is the Gingerbread House that replicates the West Wing, Executive Residence, East Wing, the Rose Garden, and the First Ladies’ Garden. Not only was this delicious masterpiece constructed from 275 pounds of gingerbread dough, but 25 pounds of chocolate and royal icing. I was so amazed at the detail and was quickly reminded of all the times I would bake gingerbread man cookies with my mom on a snowy day as a kid.

Standing at over eighteen feet in height was the official White House Christmas tree in the Blue Room. Despite the name of the room, the tree glistened with yellow and gold decor and represented hope for a brighter future for America’s children. The tree highlighted real students’ work of what they think makes their state special enough to call home.

crosshall

As our visit came to an end, the Cross Hall and Grand Foyer were by far my favorite parts. While the Grand Foyer was filled with gifts, I was reminded that gifts do not have to only be the ones we see underneath the tree. I am so grateful for all the love and happiness in my life, especially in 2020, and I hope you all really had the chance to reflect on your own life this past year. It may have been a tough year, but we continue to fight through hardships, love one another, and remind ourselves that we are in this together.
