Beginner’s Guide to Backpacking in Asia

Submitted by Daniella Avisado

Backpacking through Asia is a dream for many travelers, including myself. Although I’ve personally never been to Asia before, there are tons of vloggers & influencers out there that have documented their experiences. I’ve definitely learned a few things from them and would love to share my knowledge with you all. Here’s a guide to help you potentially start your journey:

1. Choosing Your Destinations

Asia is incredibly diverse, with countries that differ in culture, climate, and cost. As a beginner, it’s essential to narrow down your options based on your interests. Popular backpacking routes include:

  • Southeast Asia: Countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos are known for their affordability, beautiful landscapes, and welcoming backpacker communities. This region is perfect for first-timers due to its relatively easy transportation options.
  • East Asia: Japan, South Korea, and China offer more developed infrastructures but can be more expensive. These countries are great for those interested in blending tradition with modernity.
  • South Asia: India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka are perfect for cultural immersion and thrilling adventures but may require more planning due to varied climates and conditions.
2. Budgeting for your Trip

One of the biggest reasons people choose to backpack over other travel styles is to save money. Backpacking in Asia can be incredibly cheap but also costly if not done right. Therefore, it’s important to budget and allocate places where you can save and where you can splurge a bit more. Some of the best areas to reduce spending are on sleeping accommodations and food. Although not every country is the same, there are many with hostels costing as little as $5-$10 per night and street food meals for under $3.

3. Packing Essentials

As a backpacker, traveling light is crucial. Pack versatile clothing appropriate for various climates, from humid tropical heat to cooler mountain regions. Essentials include:

  • Light, breathable clothing for hot climates
  • A good-quality backpack that’s comfortable for long-term wear
  • A sturdy pair of shoes, especially for hiking or trekking
  • Travel-sized toiletries and a first aid kit with basic medicines
  • A universal power adapter and portable charger
  • Copies of important documents (passport, visa, travel insurance)
4. Transportation

Asia offers a wide range of transportation options, from budget airlines and trains to buses and boats. For cost efficiency:

  • Flights: Budget carriers like AirAsia, Scoot, and Nok Air offer affordable regional flights.
  • Trains: Countries like Japan and India have extensive train networks. This is also a great way to take in the scenic views of the countryside that are not often explored.
  • Buses: In most Southeast Asian countries, their bus system is the primary mode of transportation for short distances, offering a local experience at low prices.
  • Hitchhiking: Last but not least, hitchhiking is the best option in terms of money as there is no cost to it. However, it can be more time-consuming and it’s important to stay cautious and safe when doing so.
5. Cultural Respect

Asia is home to a wide range of cultures, religions, and traditions. Researching local customs beforehand can help you avoid unintentionally offending locals. For example, in many Buddhist countries, it’s considered rude to point your feet at someone or to touch their head. In Muslim-majority areas, such as parts of Indonesia and Malaysia, modest dress is appreciated.

6. Make Friends Along the Way

One of the most valuable things to take away from traveling is the long-life friendships you make! Hostels, group tours, and even local transportation can be great ways to meet fellow travelers and locals. Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation as you never know who you’ll meet!

Backpacking in Asia offers a thrilling combination of adventure, culture, and natural beauty. With careful planning and a willingness to embrace the unexpected, your journey through Asia will undoubtedly be a memorable one. Happy travels!
