Asian American Artist Recommendations
Submitted by Stephen Li
Happy late April! Want new music to listen to? Then look no further because here are some of the hottest Asian artists today.
Thuy
Recently performing as a headliner for MAUVSA’s (Mid Atlantic Union of Vietnamese Student Associations) gala, Vietnamese R&B artist Thuy Tran, commonly known as Thuy, is an asian American music artist blowing up in the R&B realm. In fact, she recently performed with Justin Park for UCSD’s VSA. Her most popular songs include All Night Long, Universe, and Chances, which all have over 10 million streams on Spotify respectively. Her debut EP and album I Hope You See This included some of these tracks and caused her fame to skyrocket, especially in LA. Obtaining a bachelors at UC Santa Barbara and working in the medical field for a few years, following a fateful visit to the studio with her boyfriend, she realized her passion for music and made the move to LA to pursue it full time. Soon enough, she released her first ever record Hands on Me and gained a lot of fans in the Bay Area after winning KMEL 106.1’s Home Turf music contest.
Jereena Montemayor
Recently performing as a headliner for UD FSA’s (University of Delaware Filipino Student Association) 2022 culture night on Friday 4/22, Filipino-American R&B artist Jereena Montemayor blew away the student body with her soulful voice. In fact, I had the chance to speak to her at the after party about her music career, her hobbies, and life at school. Growing up in Southern California, she moved to Houston, Texas and is currently an education major at a University in Texas. She immersed in her passion for music by singing music covers and uploading them to Youtube, Twitter, and SoundCloud until she was scouted and signed with a music label. Eventually parting ways with that label, she enjoys full control over the process of writing and creating her music while also outsourcing producers to mix her tracks for release. Throughout her journey, she released her first single Rose in 2018 which amassed more than 17 million streams on Spotify followed by her most famed track Green Tea and Honey which reached the #1 spot in Thailand and is standing at over 22 million streams on Spotify.
Dane Amar
Also recently performing as a headliner for UD FSA, Filipino-American artist Dane Amar brought the swag to the stage and got the whole student body bumping to both his rapping and singing. In fact, his performance at UD FSA was his first ever stage presence with Jereena Montemayor as they dueted their hottest song Green Tea and Honey. Earning co-sings from superstars such as JunoFlo, MEYOU, and Mathaios, Dane is making his presence known in the music industry and is an international pop star in the making.
