A Film That Will Make You Reminisce on Your Past and Future

Submitted by Gina Choi

Today I finally watched a film that I had been meaning to watch months back. Past Lives has been on my watch list for a long time, not solely due to its intriguing Korean female perspective or the praised cinematography, but primarily because of the overwhelming relatability that I’ve heard it possesses to many peoples’ own life experiences. They say you have to watch films at different stages of your life and you will have a different perspective on it. I firmly believe in this statement as I feel that watching this film taught me so many things regarding what I have experienced this past year.

One of the film’s most compelling aspects is its portrayal of nostalgia and longing for the past. By delving into the complexities of revisiting old connections, Past Lives resonates with audiences who have experienced similar emotions in their own lives. Whether it’s through the concept of lost love, friendships that have faded over time, or moments of regret and what-ifs, the film taps into the universal human experience of grappling with the passage of time and the memories it leaves behind. In addition to its exploration of the past, Past Lives also encourages viewers to consider their futures. Through its depiction of characters grappling with the uncertainties of what lies ahead, the film invites audiences to contemplate their own aspirations, hopes, and fears for the future. As viewers witness the characters navigating life’s twists and turns with resilience and introspection, they are inspired to consider their own paths and the choices that will shape the rest of their lives.

The film discusses the Korean Buddhist concept of 인연 (In-Yun) or the connection/destiny of two individuals. Past Lives takes this centuries-old concept of human relationships and brings it to our present world through the lens of the Korean diaspora. In this sense, when considering the future through the lens of In-Yun, one recognizes that future events are not isolated occurrences but are interconnected with the past and present. Every action and decision made in the present moment has consequences that ripple into the future, shaping the course of events to come. By delving into the themes of reconnecting with the past and navigating goodbyes, the film resonates with viewers on a deeply personal level, prompting them to reminisce about their own experiences while contemplating the possibilities of the future. Through its compelling storytelling and relatable characters, Past Lives captures the essence of the human experience, reminding audiences of the beauty and complexity of the journey of life.
