Want to create a dessert option to celebrate Lunar New Years or for a significant other on Valentines day? Then Sesame balls are a great option! Not only are they crispy on the outside, but they are soft, chewy, and sweet on the inside and will definitely appeal to your friends, family, and significant other!
Enjoy one of my favorite recipes from Bill who’s from a cooking blog called The Woks of Life – https://thewoksoflife.com/sesame-balls/
Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups rice flour
- ⅓ cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup boiling water
- ¼ cup room temperature water
- 7 ounces red bean paste
- ¼ cup sesame seeds
- 4 cups vegetable oil
Notes
- Prep = 1 hour 20 minutes
- Cook = 40 minutes
- Total = 2 hours
Instructions
- Make sesame ball dough – Add ½ cup rice flour and sugar in a bowl. Pour ¼ cup boiling water into the bowl. Mix with spatula until it’s smooth. Leave it for 5 minutes. Add ¼ cup water and 1 cup flour. Mix with spatula until it becomes dough. Cover it with a plate and set it aside for 30 minutes
- Sesame seeds – Wash seeds by putting them in a mesh strainer and rinsing until soaked. After drained, place seeds evenly on a plate. Use a paper towel to dry up excess water from seeds.
- Filling – Measure out 8 pieces of 24g red bean paste with kitchen scale. Roll them into balls.
- Assembly – Flatten dough balls to 3 inch in diameter and place a ball of filling at the center of the dough. Wrap dough around the filling and pinch it so thickness is spread evenly around the dough. Roll the ball in your hands to form a uniform ball.
- Ball + seeds – roll the ball in the sesame seeds until the ball is covered. Roll ball in hand and press seeds into the dough. Place the ball onto parchment paper.
- Heat 4 cup of peanut oil in a deep pot at 320°F. Oil should be halfway in the pot.
- Add 4 sesame balls to the oil and move it with a spoon to prevent it from sticking to the pot.
- Keep moving the sesame balls in the oil for 2-3 minutes with a spoon.
- Increase the oil temperature to 350°F and fry for 5 minutes and keep frying until it turns into a light golden brown.
- Transfer the finished sesame balls to a strainer and drain. Cool for 10 minutes.
