My Favorite Cheat Meals

Written by Will Chen

With Thanksgiving around the corner, all I can think about is the incredible food I’ll get to enjoy. As a young adult, I try to maintain a healthy diet most of the time, but I give myself one cheat meal each week. I usually save these for after finishing a tough project or exam, since treating myself to food I love helps ease stress and reset mentally. Here are some of the cheat meals I look forward to most.

AYCE Sushi

Sushi is one of my all-time favorite foods, and there’s no better place to enjoy it than Sakura, an all-you-can-eat restaurant a few miles from the University of Delaware. My friends and I frequent this place. Whether I’m unwinding after a long week or celebrating a small victory, sushi at Sakura has become one of my go-to cheat meals. It especially hits the spot when I haven’t had it in a while.

McDonald’s

McDonald’s is a classic fast-food spot and one I’ve always been fond of. Growing up, I loved any occasion when my parents took me there, and that nostalgia has definitely carried into adulthood. While it’s far from the healthiest option, it’s one of my favorite places to eat my stress away. My go-to item is the Filet-O-Fish, which is heavily underrated and a must-get whenever I place an order. Some items I also love ordering are the chicken nuggets, Big Mac, and a Quarter Pounder.

Fried Dumplings

As the son of Chinese restaurant owners, fried dumplings were practically a weekly staple throughout my childhood. My mom would make large batches of homemade dumplings and store them in the freezer, which made it easy for me to cook some up whenever I was home alone and needed a quick meal. The irresistible crunch of the dumpling skin and the warmth of the filling are flavors I’ve come to crave constantly in college. Whenever I get the chance to visit my parents’ restaurant, ordering a plate of fried dumplings is always the first thing I do. In my opinion, nothing can beat a homemade cheat meal.
