My Go-To Comfort Shows and Movies

Written by Steven Pham

With Thanksgiving break right around the corner (and exams stressing all of us out), I figured this was the perfect time to share some of my go-to comfort shows and movies. I’m also breaking down the science behind why rewatching comfort content can genuinely help you relax and reset.

If you need something to unwind with this break, here are a few of my favorites:

One Punch Man

Light, hilarious, and perfect when you want action without the stress. It’s also incredibly entertaining to watch the main character be so effortlessly overpowered.

Ratatouille

Cozy, warm, nostalgic, and always satisfying. This movie is an instant comfort classic that never fails to lift your mood.

Regular Show

Chaotic in the best way. It’s easy to watch, fun, and somehow always puts you in a better mood, no matter how stressed you are.

Kung Fu Panda

Wholesome, inspiring, and full of feel-good messages. It’s the perfect mix of humor, heart, and motivation.

The Science Behind Comfort Shows

  1. Predictability reduces stress.

Your brain loves knowing what comes next. Familiar shows lower uncertainty, which helps reduce anxiety and gives your mind a break from constantly processing new information.

  1. Comfort content restores mental energy.

Researchers have found that rewatching a show you already know requires less cognitive effort, allowing your brain to recover after long study sessions or back-to-back exams.

  1. Nostalgia boosts your mood.

Nostalgic movies activate positive memories, increasing feelings of warmth, connection, and emotional stability, basically giving you a psychological “reset.”

  1. Familiar characters feel like support.

Rewatching shows you love gives you a sense of safety and companionship, which can improve your mood and make you feel less overwhelmed.
