What is Sustainable Art?

Submitted by Michelle Ewton

When I think of sustainable art, I think of creating sculptures from recycled materials. I also think of Spencer Shay from iCarly, who created many abstract pieces made from the most random things, like a plastic bottle robot. While I would call some of his works from the show sustainable, I don’t think the giant toast sculpture made from pounds and pounds of butter counts. iCarly was a hit show that many people watched, and this was my introduction to sustainable art and I bet many others too.

So, what is sustainable art? Well, it can be defined in a number of ways. Some consider it to be art created from sustainable materials. Others say it’s about having a sustainable method of production. It could also just be something that will garner conversation about topics like climate change and environmental issues.

Here’s some Eco Artists who make beautiful pieces out of ordinary things. Maybe they can inspire you to create something using everyday objects that wouldn’t get used otherwise.
